When picking a charger, theres a few things to keep in-mind.

Cost of EV Chargers

Level 2 chargers range in price from just under $300 to more than $1000. The two biggest factors are amperage and cord length: If you want more, expect to pay more.

EV Charging Portability

This unit is meant to be a permanent installation, mounted to the wall on a bracket. But some are classified (confusingly) as “permanently installed, removable” and use a standard plug so you can take the charger with you if you move.

How Many Amps Should My EV Charger Be?

For Non-Teslas, 32A (amps) is the most common amperage rating for level 2 EV chargers.

For Teslas, a Tesla Wall Connector (Tesla-specific EV Charger), has a maximum output of 48A, however. (MOST ELECTRICIANS DO NOT KNOW THIS!!!!! So find you one that knows what they’re doing otherwise, they will try to “save money on parts” by using insufficient circuit breakers – which can lead to Tesla Wall Connectors overheating or in worst-case scenarios… a house fire 🚨🚒👩‍🚒💦🔥)

For Plug-in Hybrids, the most common amperage rating for a Level 2 EV charger is 32A. Most Plug-in Hybrids can draw up to 32A of electricity during charging, which means a 16A EV charger will still charge your EV at half the rate (twice as slow). A 32A EV charger is also best for your home, because the value for your home increases by being readily available for standard EV charging.

Cord Length

The location of the charger in your garage will depend on how far you’ll need to reach to access the car’s charge port. A Nissan Leaf, for instance, is about 14½ feet long and charges from the nose. We recommend a spot close to the garage door, so you can charge your car even if you’re parked in the driveway. A 16- or 18-foot cord should be fine, but go longer if you need it. These units can’t be retrofitted if you’ve left yourself short.

J1772 (Non-Tesla Plug) vs. Tesla Plug

The reason why Non-Teslas vs. Teslas matter is because every EV use the SAME plug (J1772). So most EV chargers are readily equipped with the J1772 plug.

Teslas on the other hand, have a unique plug for charging (similar to Apple products). So if you have a Tesla, you’re better off using the Tesla Wall Connector OR buying an adapter from Tesla to plug your car directly into an EV Charging Outlet (Nema 14-50R).

There’s no favoritism in here, however, our first EV is a Tesla.

Get Your House Ready

The biggest potential headache with an EV charger is whether you have proper electrical service. If your house can’t handle the extra load of a charger, you’re dealing with an even bigger project of getting a new service drop, which means cutting off power to the house and installing a new meter and breaker panel.

You’ll also need to consider the age of your garage and its distance from the house. Old wiring going to the garage might need to be replaced, and longer distances can come with a nominal increase in the size and cost of the cable that runs to the charger. In most instances, though, an electrician will be able to properly wire to your garage.

If you’re experienced with home wiring, make sure you follow all the guidelines. Ignoring them carries a very real risk of an electrical fire. National Electrical Code Article 625 covers the rules for EV-charger installation, such as where a charger can be mounted and what kind of wiring is required. Check state and local codes as well.

If you don’t have a garage, you can install a charger in your driveway. For outdoor mounting, you’ll want a unit with a NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) rating of 4X.

Least Expensive EV Chargers

Before you commit to a cheap and inexpensive EV charger, you need to first understand there are COUNTLESS factories in China and other countries mass-producing these EV chargers. Fortunately, some factories are using good parts, but some are using low-quality parts and materials. So keep in mind the quality of parts and materials used in the EV charging unit DO make a difference, and the lifespan of  your charger can be dramatically reduced by going with a bad manufacturer. Here’s an example of an EV charger that STOPPED WORKING after 5 months…

So, just know you’ll see a lot of “new” brands on Amazon and online. This doesn’t necesarilly mean the EV charging units are bad, they are just more prone to issues with quality, durability, and customer service. Don’t worry, they’re not all bad. In fact, we’re going to share the most affordable EV chargers worth buying.

With that said, here are the least expensive EV chargers we found on Amazon that had the best ratings

Side note. When we say “best ratings” on Amazon, we take into account of ALL customer reviews from 5-stars down to the 1-star reviews. We don’t just pick the average rating, but we closely examine the true strengths and weaknesses of each product by studying to the 2-star, 3-star, and 4-star reviews – which in most cases hold the most truth to these products.

BougeRV – Level 2 EV Charger (240V, 32A, 25FT) Portable EV Charging Cable NEMA 14-50P + EV Charger Holder Wall Mount SAE J1772

Price

$357.00 (Click here for current market price)

Our Rating

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 / 5 Stars

Overview

The BougeRV Level 2 EV Charger is the cheapest and seemingly reliable out of the bunch, but is NOT compatible with the built-in “charging timer” in some cars (as shared by a Chevy Bolt Owner). A built-in Charging Timer is a feature on an EV car that is a timer offering the ability to set a start time, end time, or both to enable you to charge your electric car within a specific time window. We believe a good product should be compatible with all features of standard cars – so this is a dealbreaker for us.

Pros

  • Affordable – At $357.00, this is the cheapest and reliable 32A EV charger we’ve seen. (anything under $357 is usually a 16A charger like this one)
  • Includes EV Charging Holster – We believe this is a necessity for all charging stations. Hanging your EV charging plug is one of the most overlooked aspects of EV charging installations.

Cons:

  • Not compatible with built-in charging timers – This is a big deal-breaker for us, but if it’s not important to you – a viable option.
  • Bare Minimum for Charging – As stated above, this charger may not work with some of the features of your car, but there is no doubt it will charge your car if that’s all you need in an EVSE.

LEFANEV – 32A EV Charger Level 2 Station, Wall Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station (20Ft,220V -240V, SAE J1772) for All Electric Vehicles (NEMA14-50)

Price

$399.99 (Click here for current market price)

Our Rating

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 / 5 Stars (see reviews)

Overview

THIS LEFANEV 32A Level 2 EV Charger is the best affordable EV charger we found. At the time of writing this, there’s a single 1-star review with no message whatsoever. All the others are 4-5 star ratings from customers that also submitted pictures of their charging station at home. The EV charging unit itself looks aesthetic on a wall, it comes included with mounts for hanging and mounting your the charging cord, and is backed by a lot of positive reviews. Overall, for $399.99 is a great deal and value for an EV charger.

Pros

  • Great Value for the Price – For reliability and everything included in this unit, $399.99 is a good deal.
  • Includes EV Charging Cord Hanger – Unit comes with a hanger for your EV charging cord. Most people that buy units without a hanger, eventually end up paying more for an individual unit – unless they piece something together themselves from the local hardware store.
  • Display Screen – The display screen shows real-time EV charging data such as, charging Amperage, actual charging Voltage, total kilowatt consumption, current temperature, and other informative data values.

Cons:

  • None – We couldn’t find anything bad about this charger (and no, this post is NOT sponsored)

Affordable & Reliable EV Chargers

If you’re looking for an affordable and reliable EV charger, it’s safe to choose an EV charger from a well known brand name, such as Blink, Enel X (also known as JuiceBox), EvoCharge, Clipper Creek, etc.

Most of these big brands are public companies and can’t afford to let low-quality materials ruin their reputation.

With that said, here are the popular choices of EV chargers we found on Amazon that had the best ratings.

Side note. When we say “best ratings” on Amazon, we take into account of ALL customer reviews from 5-stars down to the 1-star reviews. $899 (Click here for current market price)

Our Rating

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 / 5 Stars (see reviews)

Clipper Creek – HCS-60, 240V 48A Charging Station

Price

$899 (Click here for current market price)

Our Rating

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 / 5 Stars (see reviews)

Overview

The CLIPPER CREEK HCS-60 is a 48A (amp) EV charger and is one of the FASTEST EV chargers available. The price seems high, but is comparable to other similar EV chargers with high amps. Since the HCS-60 is a 48A charger, as long as your car is capable of drawing more than the standard 32A, you can charge at a much faster rate. Please note, every EV has specific limitations on how much amperage it can draw. This is a popular choice for the Mercedes B250e, the Tesla Model S (requires a J1772 adapter), BMW i3, and the Volkswagen e-Golf Upgrade, to name a few.

Pros

  • Fast 48A EV Charger – At 48A, this charging unit can charge you cars faster than the standard 32A (unless your car is limited to 32A).
  • High-Quality Brand – Clipper Creek is a top-of-the-line EV charging brand, and the parts used in manufacturing reflect that high-quality.
  • Customer Support – Clipper Creek’s customer support is one of the best in the EV industry.
  • 3-Year Warranty – The 3-Year Warranty is one of the highest in the EV industry.
  • Holster Included – The EV charging unit is designed in a way that allows you to coil the cord around the body of the unit, and also includes a mountable connector holster.

Cons:

  • Lack of Portability – This is a hardwired unit. For an electrician, hardwiring vs. plug-ins are more or less the same amount of labor. However, because the unit is hardwired, you cannot unplug your charger and take it with you. You must hire an electrician to un-install the unit if you so decide to.

Dual EV Charging for Multiple Cars

If you’ve fully embraced the “green life” and own 2 (or more) EVs or electric vehicles – a dual EV charger might be the best option for you. Dual charging is beneficial if you need to charge 2 EVs at the same-time. While some EV owners with multiple cars can get by with charging one EV at a time, the dual charging station allows simultaneous charging without interruptions.

There’s really just one dual EV charger we felt was high-quality, reliable, and had the best ratings on Amazon.
